Tamara Wells

Tamara was born in Bratislava, in what was then communist Czechoslovakia. Despite the outward oppression, Tamara always associated with independent thinkers and retained an independent mind, and at the age of 18 she joined the student movement known as ‘velvet revolution’ that ultimately led to the fall of communist regime in former Czechoslovakia. Freed from the oppression she took to explore the world with great enthusiasm, she gained a scholarship to study at the University of Edinburgh and later London. It was in Britain that she first came to embrace the world of art, as she visited countless galleries and exhibitions. Subsequently Tamara lived in Cambridge, Liverpool, Amsterdam, and is now based in Frankfurt. Despite of no formal art education, Tamara immersed herself to art by vising galleries across Europe and United States. In particular, she was struck by the freedom and the lightness of art of Helen Frankenthler, Joan Mitchel and Georgia O’Keffe. Her other inspirations include Gerhart Richter, Yago Hortal, Dale Chihuly, Cy Twombly, Daisuke Yokota and Yaoyi Kusama.

It was, however, the influence of the vibrant Amsterdam where she lived for 5 years, that inspired her to start painting herself. Surrounded by countless galleries, artists and art supplies shops she relentlessly tried to create art that would be like a symphony of colors. She wanted the colors to mingle, but not to merge, remaining instead in a constant interplay.

You can feel Tamara’s zest for life and her rebellious spirit in her art. Free from the limitations that a former education can put on one’s mind, she strives for her art to reflect her spirit. Freedom, fun, challenge… She has never exhibited before, instead giving her art to friends wanting to give a bit of brightness to their lives. It is our great pleasure to introduce Tamara to you through this World of Color exhibition that suits so well to her style that is characterized by love of color.
